SYDNEY -- MMA Fighting spoke to Michael Bisping after his TKO victory at Sunday's UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia about why this was a must-win fight against Jorge Rivera, the illegal knee in the first round and why he reacted the way he did after the fight.
SYDNEY -- MMA Fighting spoke to B.J. Penn after his majority draw against Jon Fitch at Sunday's UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia. Penn discussed his change of strategy going into the fight, what would motivate him to continue fighting and more.
Show the B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch fight to people who don't know how MMA is judged, and ask them who won. They'd tell you it was Fitch, obviously. But of the three people whose job it was to decide who won, only one said Fitch was the winner. The other two said it was a draw, and so that was the result: No one won the main event at UFC 127.
What's unfortunate is that the people who don't know anything about MMA would have done a better job of judging this fight than the professional judges.
Jon Fitch deserved to win the decision at UFC 127. That the fight was a draw is a combination of the fact that MMA has bad judges, and bad judging criteria.
There are moments from his UFC 127 bout with Michael Bisping in Sydney, Australia that are still fuzzy to Jorge Rivera, but there is at least one thing he knows for sure.
The illegal knee that Bisping hit him with in the first round? No matter what Bisping said later, that was no accident, Rivera told MMA Fighting on Sunday.
"That knee was deliberate, and I'll tell you exactly how I know this," Rivera said.
In the UFC's latest promotional video blog for this weekend's UFC 127 card, Michael Bisping uses a homophobic slur to insult his opponent, Jorge Rivera. This is the latest example of an ongoing problem of people involved with the UFC using completely unacceptable language. It needs to stop.
To be more specific, the UFC needs to stop it: The biggest and best mixed martial arts organization in the world needs to tell its fighters, staff and other employees that in 2011, homophobic slurs aren't acceptable, and that those who can't or won't refrain from using such language are going to face serious consequences. And the UFC certainly shouldn't feature the use of homophobic slurs in promotional materials like this video blog on the UFC's own YouTube channel.
Last time on Fighter vs. Writer, Kenny Florian and I battled to an unsatisfying tie at UFC 126. Since I lost so many of these prediction contests early on, I've been pretty happy to get ties lately, but now that feeling is wearing off. It might be time to institute a tie-breaker question, possibly one involving state capitals since that was a strength of mine in elementary school (Pierre, South Dakota, stand up!).
It won't be a problem this time around, as I go head-to-head with UFC light heavyweight Jason Brilz for UFC 127 predictions and we find plenty to disagree on.
Longtime UFC fighter Marcus Davis will continue his MMA career with Canada's Maximum Fighting Championship.
Davis, 37, had been fighting exclusively for the UFC since October 2006, but was released last month after a knockout loss to Jeremy Stephens at UFC 125.
MFC president Mark Pavelich announced the signing Friday during the MFC 28 broadcast on HDNet.
Paul Daley doesn't do anything fancy: He just punches really hard.
Daley did it again on Saturday in Manchester, England, knocking out Yuya Shirai with a powerful left uppercut followed by a quick hook and a couple hammer fists on the ground, winning by first round knockout without breaking a sweat on a British Association of Mixed Martial Arts card.
Daley, who improved his record to 27-9-2, is now likely to take on Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce welterweight title on April 9. Although Daley didn't say for sure that he'll fight Diaz, he did say after the fight, "There's more to come for me."
