Riggs vs. Baroni: Louisville Slugfest

May 31st, 2009
Sometimes it’s easy to anticipate all out brawls, and it seems like Strikeforce is intent on putting them together. Radach vs. Smith was a war we could all see coming, though perhaps we didn’t realize how great a fight it was going to be. Brett Rogers vs. “Abongo” Humphrey was a slugfest worth taking note of [...]

May 31st, 2009

(Courtesy of YouTube.com/BellatorMMA)

Though Hector Lombard drew most of the attention at Friday's Bellator show, the night's best stoppage belonged to Chad Leonhardt — great name for a fighter, by the way — who scored a YouTube-worthy first-round KO over Daniel Keenan. Watch as Leonhardt crushes Keenan with an overhand right, then puts him to sleep with a mouthpiece-ejecting knee to the face. Thanks, Chad. Bellator's upcoming schedule is after the jump...

Wargods V quick results for May 30 event

May 31st, 2009

The Wargods V event went down last night (Saturday, May 30) from Viejas Casino in Alpine, California.

In the evening’s main event, former UFC light heavyweight contender Vernon “Tiger” White came up short against former collegiate Division 1 wrestler Lew “The Titan” Polley.

Polley used his wrestling to suffocate any offense by White and controlled the match from the opening bell. Aside from a bizarre referee stand-up towards the end of the second round that may have saved “The Tiger” from a pending Kimura, Polley had everything going his way.

Pancrase veteran Steve Magdaleno, who stepped in to replace a limp Andy Wang, dominated Carlos Garsas, who ironically had to replace Wang’s original opponent Kit Cope.

While Cope was advertised on the main card, some undisclosed funny business took place behind the scenes that Cope says left a lot of fighters with the impression that the show had been canceled.

As a result, Cope’s teammate Lucas Gamaza, also did not participate. He was replaced by Mike “Showtime” Aryano, who was quickly submitted in the first round by Tarec Saffiedine.

Check out the complete Wargods V quick results after the jump:

Lew Polley defeated Vernon “Tiger” White by unanimous decision
Steve Magdaleno defeated Carlos Garsas via submission (armbar) R1
Joe Duarte defeated David Gardner via TKO (strikes) R1
Bryan Travers defeated Tom Belt via unanimous decision
Tarec Saffiedine defeated Mike “Showtime” Aryano via submission (keylock) R1
Rick Slaton defeated Salah Zabian via TKO (strikes) R1
Bailey Byrne defeated Mentoa McKenzie via submission (triangle choke) R1
Leland Gridley defeated Jorge Sanchez via submission (armbar) R2
Gareth Joseph defeated Jose Diaz via TKO (strikes) R1

Tim Sylvia may use Ray Mercer bout as springboard for boxing title run

May 31st, 2009
While the announcement of Tim Sylvia's (24-5 MMA, 0-0 Boxing) June boxing bout with former boxing heavyweight champion Ray Mercer (0-0 MMA, 36-7 Boxing) has been met with mixed emotions, the former UFC champ may not be one-and-done in the sport.

Sylvia recently told Fighters Only magazine that he would be open to a sustained run in the sport.

"[Boxing] is something I've always wanted to pursue, and if it works out like I'd like for it too, I can switch over," Sylvia said.

Frank Trigg is back with the UFC

May 31st, 2009

franktrigg Frank Trigg is back with the UFC

Good for him. The UFC has been pretty decent lately about booking up some of the guys who bled for them back before the money really started to flow in the sport. Guys like Jeremy Horn, David L’Oiseau, Mark Coleman and yep even Evan Tanner fit into this category.

Now you can add Frank Trigg to the list, and why not? Dana has often said his favorite fight in UFC history was Hughes / Trigg 2. So why wouldn’t he give Frank a chance for one more go at things? I doubt he’ll get too far (especially if he ends up fighting Josh Koscheck as rumored), but at least he has the opportunity make enough coin off his stay that he won’t have to fight on Native reservations until he’s 50 (like some other guys I can think of).

So for all the Trigg haters, think of it like this: in the long run, this could actually mean LESS Frank Trigg.
