The Potato Index: UFC 102 Aftermath

(What do you get when you have a big left hand and not much else? One highlight in a losing effort. Photo courtesy of SI.com)
This week the Potato Index confronts one of mankind's oldest problems as we sort through the UFC 102 aftermath, and it goes a little something like this: How much does a fighter's stock drop if he loses after getting his testicles kicked up into his throat? On one hand, a TKO loss never results in a rise on the Potato Index's arbirtrary numerical rankings scale, but on the other, simply not quitting and going off to sob in a dark corner is an accomplishment. The answer to this age-old question, and others, awaits you.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira +213
So you thought Big Nog was done just because he looks like he’s a senior citizen and fought like one against Frank Mir? Anybody can have a bad night. He showed on Saturday that he’s still got some bullets in the old gun, at least as long as he’s fighting representatives from the UFC’s AARP wing. Unless someone wants to see him killed, though, please keep him far away from Brock Lesnar.
Randy Couture -56
It’s hard to be too critical of a gutsy performance like that one. He didn’t look old or haggard, and didn’t lose because he was too slow or too weak. He just wasn’t the better fighter that night. Now we wait to find out what’s next, and whether the UFC really plans to give him two more years worth of fights, or if it’s just a way of keeping him off the Strikeforce roster.
MMA Fighter Toni Valtonen Has Swastika, ‘White Pride’ Tattoos
Filed under: M-1 Global
Toni Valtonen is a Finnish mixed martial artist who fights all around the world for Team Finland in the M-1 Challenge, including two fights in the United States this year. A veteran with a 19-9 record, Valtonen hasn't done much in the ring to distinguish himself from any of the thousands of other athletes who compete in MMA.But he is now attracting attention for something unrelated to his fighting: Valtonen has a swastika tattooed on his shoulder and the words "white pride" tattooed on his back.

UFC Quick Quote: Opportunity is knocking for Jake Rosholt

"Leben hasn’t spent much time on the ground with somebody who’s really tried to pass his guard and advance positions. I knew sooner or later that was going to come out of him, he was going to get frustrated. He’s tough. He’s got a good chin and he doesn’t tap. I knew that I was basically going have to put him out. I want to become the best fighter I can become down the road. If I’m able to go out there, stand-up and frustrate people and really use my boxing and striking to set up those takedowns, they’re going to come easier. It’s going to wear those people down and give me more opportunities when I do get it to the ground."
Up-and-coming middleweight Jake Rosholt reflects on his UFC 102 win over former TUF bad boy Chris Leben at UFC 102 on August 29 in Portland. The decorated collegiate wrestler tells Cagewriter that his ability to frustrate his opponents will be the key to his success going forward as it was against "The Crippler." Does Rosholt have the goods to become a serious threat to the top 185-pounders? Or is he boarding a sinking ship on the seas of Belfort, Marquardt and Silva? Opinions please…

UFC 102 Medical Suspensions: Ed Herman Suspended Indefinitely
Filed under: UFC
Portland resident Ed Herman has been suspended indefinitely by the Oregon athletic commission following his UFC 102 loss Saturday at the Rose Garden.Herman will be required to be cleared by a physician for an injury on his left knee before he is allowed to compete again. He's been referred for an MRI.
Herman's knee buckled in the first round of his fight against Aaron Simpson and was openly hobbling in his corner between the first and second rounds. Herman chose to fight through the injury, but it only took 17 seconds into the second round for the injury to turn ugly. While throwing a right kick that was caught, his left knee buckled again, this time rendering him unable to continue.

Despite UFC 102 headliner, White reiterates no interest in five-round non-title fights
Although the Nevada State Athletic Commission has officially opened the door for non-title five-rounders, the UFC won't be using the option.
White admits that while watching Nogueira navigate his way to a decision victory at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., he thought about it. But the purist in him wants to keep five-round fights strictly for championship bouts.
Randy Couture’s Fight-Night Video Blog
(Props: YouTube.com/UFC. For part one of the 8/29 Randyvlog, which features Couture's pre-fight preparation, visits from Wanderlei Silva and Brock Lesnar, and Randy's walkout, click here.)
If you're going to lose a fight, you might as well do it surrounded by people who love you. Randy Couture — who described Saturday night in Portland as the loudest audience he's ever fought in front of — was given a hero's reception by all the fans in attendance at UFC 102 as well as everyone he came across backstage. The above video-blog shows excerpts from his fight against Nogueira shot cageside (right behind the guy with the airhorn!), as well as the aftermath, in which Randy is examined by a doctor and takes questions at the post-event press conference. It's hard to predict where Couture's fight career will go from here, but with fan response this overwhelmingly positive, the Natural's days of high-profile fights in the Octagon are far from over.
UFC 102 medical suspensions and injuries

The Oregon State Athletic Commission today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 102, which took place on Saturday, August 29 from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon.
As standard practice for combat sports in “The Beaver State,” all 22 fighters were issued medical suspensions for their participation in the “Couture vs. Nogueira” pay-per-view event.
While everyone got a mandatory time-out, most of the suspensions were only for seven days as a precautionary measure.
UFC middleweight Ed Herman got the stiffest sentence, getting suspended indefinitely after blowing out his knee in the second round against Aaron Simpson.
Other notable and lengthy health-related suspensions were dished out to Tim Hague (60 days) for being put to sleep by Todd Duffee and Chris Tuchscherer (45 days) for his facial laceration suffered at the hands of Gabriel Gonzaga.
