Kimbo vs. Nelson

So the big fight just ended. Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson. The internet street fighting legend against a top fifteen Heavyweight. Guy with a beard takes on guy with a belly.

Forums have been lit up since it was revealed they would fight last week. Everyone has been asking me about what’s gonna happen. Kimbo hyped it up like the second coming of Hughes/Trigg II, saying “This fight is very exciting. Pound for pound, it’s one of my best fights.” My inbox was bombarded with emails hyping up ‘the biggest fight in Ultimate Fighter history’.

If that was the biggest fight in the show has ever had, I don’t know what’s been making me watch it for almost five years.

Slice had an absolutely awful performance tonight. For seeming like such a nice guy, for all the overwhelming circumstances he was put in by Elite XC, for all the hate he gets, there’s no defense for him as a mixed martial artist anymore. What we see is what we get with Kimbo.

The big knock on him was his ground game. James Thompson was able to drive the inexperience home in May 2008. In front of millions on CBS, he pinned Slice down with a crucifix and landed a garbage bag full of punches to his defenseless face.

Tonight we saw Roy Nelson give everyone déjà vu. The position was the same, the ground and pound was the same, the helplessness was the same. TUF was filmed in June 2009; the Thompson fight in May 2008. Thirteen months went by and is looks like there were no moves made to become a better competitor.

Of course, you can say “Hey, Roy Nelson should’ve been the IFL champ, no big deal Kimbo lost to him.” That argument doesn’t fly when Kimbo was bullied by an upper level fighter identically to how he was bullied by a lower level fighter. The gap between Thompson and Nelson is about as wide as it gets, yet they both yielded similar results. What’s to say anyone with a talent level in between them won’t also hold Slice down and do as they please?

I suppose it doesn’t even matter, since Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, Rashad Evans, craft services, and the guy who throws away the semen food at the house all gloat about how impressed they were with Slice’s TUF performance. Apparently it was even good enough to get him a fight in December. Whatever they claim showed promise must have taken place later, because there was nothing to be proud of after this fight – and that goes for Nelson, too.

It’s not that Roy had a bad performance; he just left the front door open, so to speak. TUF 10 was made to be Heavyweights for a reason. Dana wanted the Kimbo gravy train to start bringing in money for him now. You think he was happy with Nelson for not winning in brutal fashion? You think he didn’t foresee the ignorant fans’ reaction to the fight? You think he’s stupid? Of course he was gonna trash the result we ended up getting. Dana is a business man, and one of the rules he follows is that you don’t kill the golden goose.

It was supposed to be a win-win situation for the UFC. Either Roy Nelson pulls a Petruzelli and Dana can gloat about how he was right all along, or Kimbo gets a fantastic win and justifies Zuffa putting him in the same positions EXC did. What we actually got was a guy beating Kimbo with zero effort, but in a non-“OMG!” inducing manner that shot all those plans straight to hell.

There would have been no questions had Roy crushed Slice with a head kick or choked him unconscious with a Brabo. We wouldn’t be here absolutely dreading the tidal wave of “Roy’s a pussy” and “that was a weak stoppage” comments that will drench us tomorrow. Nelson could have just gone for one Americana, one Kimura, to have avoided this entire unnecessary backlash inevitably coming his way.

And it’s unfortunate because he doesn’t deserve any of it. Dana completely no-sold the victory after it was shown:

“It was like I let my daughter pin me down and hit me…That’s the kind of shots Roy Nelson was hitting him with….Roy did just enough to win and not get hit.”

What did they expect him to do, get his ear blown up standing and banging with Kimbo? The man is in a tournament with almost no turnarounds between rounds, of course he’s treating his opportunity with enough respect not to throw it away in one match. For that he’s portrayed as a chump for being intelligent and responsible, and looking out for his career. What a wussy, right Dana?

I guess this is all just the UFC’s way of keeping us reeled in. They hard sold this bout like nothing before on “The Ultimate Fighter” and we got nothing for our anticipation. Some were disappointed, some were vindicated, but most were indifferent because we didn’t learn anything from the fight. Kimbo will never be a good fighter (which hurts to say since he’s such a nice guy), Nelson is still hovering around the top ten, and the UFC is occasionally hypocritical if it makes them monies.

Man, what a three month old crucifix mount can tell us about this sport.

Roy Nelson Beats Kimbo Slice on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’: What’s Next?

We knew heading into this season of The Ultimate Fighter that Roy Nelson is bigger, stronger and more skillful than Kimbo Slice, and that Kimbo needs to get better on the ground. So in one respect, Nelson's second-round TKO victory over Kimbo on Wednesday night's episode of the UFC's reality show didn't teach us much.

But even though Nelson beat Kimbo decisively, I came away from their fight more convinced than I was before that Kimbo is worthy of fighting in the UFC. I also came away more convinced than I was before that Nelson is the favorite to win this season's Ultimate Fighter tournament.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10: Episode 3 recap and discussion

September 30th, 2009

TUF 10

Episode three of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 10 is now underway with Kimbo being reflective about his relationship with God and butchering the use of the term “Oxymoron.” He also explains the difference between his “enemy” and “inner me.”

Could we be seeing the softer side of Kimbo?

Roy Nelson doesn’t want to be a “hater” and slam Kimbo for being an overnight sensation. The Evans gang has a head-shaking moment over “Big Country,” who has no manager, no training camp and very few friends. They do however recognize his talent and think he’s got the skill set to finish Slice.

Rampage cracks a smile when Keith Jardine hits the gym for the standard TUF cameo. It of course boils over when Rashad and Rampage start arguing over who hurt Jackson’s jaw, when they were supposed to fight, who really killed Kennedy, etc.

Rampage gets a few laughs when he says Rashad beat Chuck Liddell with his breath. Two points for the readers who immediately pick up on the “Thunderdome” reference.

James McSweeney steps in to back Rashad and Rampage complains that he can’t understand him. Not because of his British accent — because he’s trying to talk with Rashad’s nuts in his mouth.

Over at the gym, Rampage continues his stellar work as coach by deconstructing Kimbo’s beard and chicken bone eating habits. He likes that Slice is humble and has assistant coach Tiki Ghosn work on the brawler’s ground game.

Team Jackson understands the challenge of overcoming Nelson’s big belly but decide instead of cramming for a grappling exam they’ll just let his hands fly and hope for the knockout.

Big Country is already having visions of crucifixes and stoppages from unanswered blows to the face. He explains to some of the guys that they don’t even have to be hard shots — if they’re not defended the fight must be stopped.

Apparently he never heard of Dan Miragliotta.

During the commercial break we get an unintentionally funny promo for UFC 104 featuring Lyoto Machida screaming in broken English and sounding like Corky when he wanted more pie.

Team Jackson is going through their workout and suddenly Marcus Jones is missing in action. They find him in the corner afflicted with a case of the limps. It seems all that size he carries around is causing problems for his knee.

The gang starts to make fun of Jones, who also admits to playing Dungeons and Dragons, collecting comics and picking flowers. He labels himself “the most boring brother around.”

Straight up tedium, dawg.

Later in the house, Jones and Slice connect on a spiritual level and Kimbo gets another fighter to vouch for him as a man. Quote of the season thus far courtesy of Kimbo, who sees some of himself in the ex-NFLer: “Marcus Jones big-ass blew up and I’m one of the pieces.

Weigh-ins! Slice and Nelson hit the scales and it’s 230 for Kimbo and 264 for Nelly.

The fight inches closer and Roy is not opposed to keeping it standing — if he’s getting the better of the exchanges. Kimbo on the other hand is just looking forward to getting in the cage and finally fighting. I think it’s safe to say that so is everyone else that’s watching, especially after months of spoilers, leaks and Internet speculation.

Finally. It’s time.

Heavyweight elimination fight #3: Roy Nelson (13-4) vs. Kimbo Slice (3-1)

Round 1: Nelson working the jab. Nice leg kick by Slice. Lots of bobbing and weaving. Off to a slow start. Kimbo finally opens up and pushes him to the cage while landing some strikes. Nelson ties him up against the fence. Nelson looking for the takedown but Kimbo not going easy. Action stalls against the fence. Nelson finally pulls him from the cage and trips him down. Nelson flat on top working for the kimura. Slice has the guard of Houston Alexander but gets a rise from the gang when he flips off the fence — unfortunately Nelson and his belly keep him from turning over. Nelson traps the arms and starts whaling away straight down on Kimbo’s noggin. Referee Herb Dean lets the punishment go in a scene eerily reminiscent of the James Thompson fight Slice had in Elite XC back in May 2008. The only thing in Dean’s favor is the fact that he knew only a few seconds remained in the fight and the world would be watching. Time expires with Kimbo getting pummeled.

Round 2: Kimbo clocks him and Roy flops around for a moment until a they tie up and a knee attempt by Slice leads to a Nelson takedown. They hit the ground and it’s right back to the jits for Big Country. Rampage: “Don’t let him do that!” Thanks coach. Nelson moving from mount to side control with no resistance. Crucifix part two. From there it’s academic. Nelson pounds away until Dean is forced to stop it.

Roy Nelson defeats Kimbo Slice via TKO

Fight was a monumental letdown, as it appears nothing has changed since the last few times we saw Kimbo. We just happen to know him a little better. While he’s undoubtedly a nice guy, he has a long way to go before he can be considered a mixed martial artist.

And Nelson might have grappling cred, but his stand-up was nothing to write home about. Dana slammed his performance following the fight, claiming he hit like a little girl and did way too much celebrating after the win.

Kimbo gets real for the cameras and says he feels like crap for losing but won’t quit because he’s a fighter who is still learning. Time will tell.

Stay tuned next week as Marcus Jones pulls a Phillipe Nover and we’re teased with a potential Kimbo comeback. And oh no! There’s a traitor in the Evans camp! Gasp! Who could it be?

Find out in seven!
