Machida/Shogun II: Later rather than sooner

October 31st, 2009

28kmqac Machida/Shogun II: Later rather than sooner

Joe Rogan screamed “The Machida Era has begun!” after Lyoto Machida crushed Rashad Evans at UFC 98. After Lyoto’s victory over Shogun Rua at 104, he should have yelled “The Machida Era has ended!”

It wasn’t the crash-and-burn kind of momentum halt that ended the reigns of Takanori Gomi or Matt Hughes, but it raised serious concerns with the UFC Light-Heavyweight champion. Be well aware they have nothing to do with his skills – the man is so good he wins even when he loses. The question now is one we never thought we’d have to ask: Has Lyoto Machida found his match?

We need to know the answer; Machida has to have an immediate rematch with Shogun. The only people that believe Lyoto won were the three judges and his dad. Fighters predicted a blowout by Machida, and were unsatisfied, like us fans, with the results. Shogun’s performance was so strong that even Dana White admitted he should have won the fight during the post-event press conference. The outcome of the fight had some serious impacts on each guy’s career – whether it was for better or worse.

The house of cards Lyoto built being the c-c-combo breaker for Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans’ undefeated streaks came tumbling down when he not only reverted back to his cautious, “evasive” style, but was finally on the receiving end of some real damage. People don’t see him as the untouchable Ka-rah-tay technician they believed him to be; now he’s a cat burglar after UFC 104.

The ‘robbed’ Shogun Rua may have lost the battle, but he’s won the war. Nobody looks at him the same way after this fight. The general consensus is that he should be champion. He proved he can go into the deep water and do damage at a pace, unlike the Shogun of old who would fade after minutes of intense offense. Perhaps most important of all, he showed that Machida is not unbeatable.

Judges aside, there is no question about who the better fighter was that night – emphasis on the “that night”. And there is the hook for the rematch. Just like snowflakes, fights at the top level are never exactly the same. Anderson Silva straightened Machida’s technical shortcomings backstage before he even got into the shower, and you can bet Shogun is gonna re-watch the fight like it’s his honeymoon tape and filter out the less effective stuff for gameplan v2.

Rua will likely keep the core strategy of targeting the thighs and body of Lyoto Machida because of how effective it was. It’s almost as if he gradually worked his strikes up from the legs to the stomach to the face; eventually landing headshots by the end. The winner of the fight was ironically beaten up more than the loser (Take that correct usage, Alanis!). Sapping away the power and the gas of Machida allowed Shogun to hone his offense so much that the champion was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission for a lip laceration.

Although Kurt Pellegrino and Matt Hamill showed that a ripped face isn’t a big deal, the hand damage Lyoto suffered is going to be the traffic jam on the road to Rematchville. Dana White wanted to have the fight on January 2nd, and Shogun agreed to it, but Machida’s bone spurs require surgery that will prevent him from training until later that month.

An immediate rematch is still the plan according to everyone. Lyoto’s pride is hurt just as much as his body, and he probably wants a mulligan for the fight everyone puts an asterisk next to. Shogun ‘won’ the fight with his own skill and nothing else; he’s probably eager to get rounds 6-10 on soon before his confidence goes away. Whatever the case, we’ll either see justice be served or get the all clear to stop caring about all of this controversy.

UFC 107: Jon Fitch vs Mike Pierce booked with Thiago Alves hurt

October 31st, 2009

The third time will hopefully be the charm for Jon Fitch (19-3) now that up-and-coming welterweight Mike Pierce (10-1) has agreed to step up and face him at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12.

Pierce was originally slated to meet Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 20 until “Kos” was promoted to the UFC 106 co-main event opposite Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

Like Pierce, Fitch was left without an opponent when Ricardo Almeida injured his knee and withdrew from their UFC 106 bout on Nov. 21. Zuffa worked a little magic and booked him in a rematch of former number one welterweight contenders opposite Thiago Alves on Dec. 12; however, “Pitbull” also went down with a knee injury and was forced to bow out.

Fitch returned to the Octagon at UFC 100 to exact revenge against submission specialist Paulo Thiago, taking the contest via unanimous decision. The Brazilian stunned his good friend and American Kickboxing Academy training partner, Josh Koscheck, with a fight-ending first round uppercut at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” earlier this year.

The Purdue University wrestler now boasts 10 victories for the promotion in 11 attempts. The lone blemish on his record is to welterweight deity Georges “Rush” St. Pierre in their championship match from UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” in Aug. 2008.

And the competition isn’t getting any easier.

Pierce recently stunned quite a few fans in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 19, registering a convincing unanimous decision over the super tough Brock Larson. It was just the third loss in Larson’s impressive career. And it marked six straight wins for the surging Pierce.

Despite his recent success, Pierce will no doubt be a heavy underdog on fight night when he gets locked inside the cage opposite the 11-fight UFC veteran.

UFC 107 will feature a main event between lightweight division champion, BJ Penn, defending his title against number one division contender, Diego Sanchez. In the co-featured fight of the night, former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir will “begin his quest for a third title” when he takes on Cheick Kongo.

Strikeforce signs DREAM welterweight GP champion Marius ‘Whitemare’ Zaromskis

October 31st, 2009

NEW YORK (Oct. 31, 2009) – DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix Champion Marius “Whitemare” Zaromskis (13-3) of Lithuania has signed a multi-fight agreement with world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion Strikeforce.

Known for his explosive, highlight reel kicks, the 29-year-old, world-ranked Zaromskis has been his opponents’ worst “Whitemare” the last three years. The 2009 DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix Champion has won five fights in a row and nine of his last 10.

Zaromskis is coming off an utter destruction of Myeon Ho Bae, winning by 0:19, first-round KO on Oct 25. The victory earned Zaromskis the 2009 DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix crown.

Remarkably, it was the third consecutive time Zaromskis won a fight with a head kick in the opening round. On July 20, 2009, he defeated both Jason High (2:22) and heavily favored Hayoto Sakurai (4:03) with head kicks to win DREAM’s 170-pound tournament.

Zaromskis turned pro on Feb. 4, 2000. He fought several times for UK-based Cage Rage before joining DREAM in early 2009.

Two of his three losses came against former Cage Rage British champion in Che Mills.

Strikeforce in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on the premium cable television network, Showtime. Next Saturday, November 7, Strikeforce will make its live debut on CBS with its “Fedor vs. Rogers” mega-fight that it is co-promoting with M-1 Global.
