Nick Diaz Looks Back on Title Win, Wants Georges St-Pierre Next

Nick Diaz held court following his first-round TKO victory over Marius Zaromskis Saturday night, and the new Strikeforce welterweight champion touched on everything from his performance in the fight, his belief that he doesn't receive enough respect in the MMA community and some of his proudest accomplishments in MMA.

Diaz also said that he didn't believe Jay Hieron, who defeated Joe Riggs at Strikeforce: Miami, was a worthy No. 1 contender and that the only fight that really excites him right now is one against UFC 170-pound champion Georges St-Pierre. Check out the video below.

The next Strikeforce WW shot goes to … Sakurai?

January 31st, 2010

What’s next for Jay Hieron? Probably not a title shot. And maybe not even another fight with Strikeforce! Here’s what Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker was pushing for Nick Diaz’s first title defense:

Nick Diaz vs. Hayoto Sakurai: Most people thought Jay Hieron earned a shot at the welterweight title by defeating Joe Riggs, but Coker said it’s more likely that Sakurai will be the challenger in Diaz’s first title defense. Sakurai fights for Dream, and Coker said Strikeforce’s co-promotional arrangement with Dream ensures that “I could get it done.” Hieron’s win over Riggs was the last fight on his Strikeforce contract, and it’s not clear whether Hieron will return to the promotion.

Jay was still talking about a Strikeforce title shot as recently as right after his fight with Joe Riggs, so I wonder if this ‘not clear’ thing has to do with something Scott Coker said or just the obvious realization that once Jay hears he’s probably getting the title shot shaft again, he might not bend over and take it anymore.

In other fun Hieron related news, Nick Diaz has started refering to him as an undercard fighter:

“I’d rather fight someone that’s a little more important than Jay Hieron,” Diaz said. “His fight wasn’t even on the main card. Why am I going to fight him when no one saw [his fight]? I don’t even know who he is.”

Which must piss Hieron off since Diaz is the reason he got stuck on the undercard in the first place. But it is true: no one has seen Hieron’s fights. Not only has Strikeforce been stubbornly unwilling to put Hieron’s last win against Jesse Taylor online, but EA’s attempt to stream Riggs/Hieron on EASportsMMA.com ended in total failure. It’s not like shit like this isn’t par for the course with Hieron. The fight before the Taylor one was his Affliction fight against Jason High, which got shunted to after the main event and only got shown on HDNet’s Inside MMA.

So Hieron’s got that disadvantage hanging over him, plus the fact that his two Strikeforce fights were not the kind of affairs that had people using words like ‘exciting’, ‘explosive’, and ‘impressive’. Still, it blows me away that Scott Coker is gunning for Mach Sakurai instead, a guy who’s lost his last two fights – one of those a starching from Zaromskis, for gods sake and the other because Mach looked like he was just there for a paycheck.

Zaromskis at least held the DREAM welterweight belt. But ignoring Hieron again and going for another DREAM fighter doesn’t just send a message to Jay, it sends a message to us all that Strikeforce is more interested in promoting another organization’s fighters than it’s own. What does that say about their roster? Not much that we haven’t already figured out ourselves, I suppose.

Free agent Jay Hieron still not guaranteed title shot with new Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz

January 31st, 2010
Following their respective wins at Saturday's "Strikeforce: Miami" event, newly crowned welterweight champion Nick Diaz and top contender Jay Hieron would seem logical opponents for an upcoming card.

However, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker isn't sure Hieron deserves the title shot, and Diaz said he'd rather fight big-name fighters - not "undercard fighters" such as Hieron.

And perhaps the biggest stumbling block of all? Hieron, who signed with Strikeforce in 2009 primarily because he was promised a title shot, has fulfilled the terms of the contract and now needs a new deal if he's to stay with the promotion.

At Least Wes Sims Is Entertaining Outside of the Cage

January 31st, 2010

(Skip to the 0:21 mark to see Ariel Helwani having a near-death experience at the hands of Wes Sims.)

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Wes Sims would claim his loss to Bobby Lashley at last night's Strikeforce event was the result of an incompetent referee and an unscrupulous opponent. I guess I also shouldn’t be surprised that he showed up to fight looking like he might be five months pregnant, or that he claims to think that the fight was stopped too early. But the fact that he could say, with a straight face, that Lashley didn’t do anything but take him down and lay on him, that seems absurd even for Sims. As anyone who actually watched the fight knows, it was Lashley doing most of the work on the mat while Sims was, in Mauro Ranallo’s words, “holding on for dear life but not defending himself intelligently.”

If you go back and watch the video, just after the two-minute mark you can clearly hear the referee warning Lashley about the thumb to the throat several times, so maybe Sims has a legitimate gripe there. Did it change the outcome of the fight? Based on the fact that Sims’ game plan seemed to consist of a test of strength followed by a lot of pained facial expressions, I’m going to go ahead and say no.

Check out Lashley’s bemused response to all this nonsense after the jump.
