Bloody Elbow Judo Chop: The Half Guard Sweeps of Wilson Reis Upend Shad Lierley at Bellator XIV

Bellator's second season has featured some of the more technically interesting fights I've seen this year. The second show of the season was no exception as featherweight Wilson Reis showed a dizzying array of sweeps from deep half guard that repeatedly put his opponent -- wrestler Shad Lierley on his back.

The techniques that Reis used so reflect the dramatic advances made at the higher levels of jiu jitsu over the past decade and a half. They're only now beginning to make it to MMA. While Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's amazing array of sweeps from half guard hinted at what is possible, the next wave of guard innovations are a dramatic step forward.

I will be the first to admit that I'm a good decade behind the latest BJJ theory, so by all means go out and learn more elsewhere, just please come back to our comments and share what you find or already know.

Here's a little bit about the Deep Half Guard position from the esteemed Grapple Arts site:

In the Deep Half Guard you are - as the name implies - deep underneath your opponent's hips. Typically you are trying to keep your body turned onto its side, and can control either your opponent's hip (1st picture) or your opponent's thigh (2nd picture) with your top arm. The legs can do a variety of things, including triangling around the opponent's leg, butterfly hooking underneath it and more.

The Deep Half Guard is primarily used for sweeping your opponent and has very few submission attacks available from it. This position and some of the techniques associated with it was the subject of a Grappling Tip post on our Blog. To date it has not found a lot of application in mixed martial arts competition, probably for fear of getting punched in the face. Perhaps a future competitor will yet come along and offer some new insight into using this position in an MMA context.

Reis definitely showed how to use this position in MMA at Bellator XIV. The secret was really getting in and out of the position as fast as possible. Reis' attacks were a blur to the untrained eye, all that was immediately clear was that one second he's on his back under Lierley and the next moment Reis is on top.

I asked BE reader AboveThisFire to break down the moves gif by gif in the full entry. This will spare him the effort of correcting my mistakes in the comment and give you, the reader, more insight to the techniques on display.

I'd also recommend checking out Marcelo Garcia's book The X Guard to learn more about innovative guard play.

SBN coverage of Bellator XIV

Gifs by Chris Nelson.

Take it away AboveThisFire:

117wpjo_mediumIn the first gif we see Reis initiating an elevator sweep from half guard to set up an x-guard or deep half (he's got two options depending on how Shad's left leg reacts to the right leg raise putting him off balance). He could also try to finish a full sweep from here but it's higher risk.

Mtt4c5_mediumBecause Shad had to post the left leg in a different position after Reis used the elevator setup to put him off balance, Reis is able to lock around Shad's left leg and execute a single leg stand up (a la Marcelo Garcia) and then he just tips him into the high single takedown while sweeping the standing foot out as well.

J5chti_medium Reis is executing a partial setup to go to deep half (full deep half is not a good idea in mma... lets you get your face punced in pretty easy) but he hooks Shad's leg to open it up and create space/put Shad off balance, Reis tris to shoot out the backdoor hooking his arm up and over on the hip trying to spin out all the way and execute another sweep or single leg stand up.

A3ijxj_medium

In the fourth gif Reis shoots the entire deep half and goes for what's called a "Homer Simpson Sweep" (or Three Stooges sweep, named after Curly (or Homer) running in a circle while laying on the ground, which is essentially the motion of the sweep from deep half. Jeff Glover has youtube vids for more.

2qs48ic_mediumHere Reis simply unbalancing Shad, trying to grab a foot, Shad doesn't want his foot taken so he moves directly in front of Reis giving Reis butterfly guard with double unders.

 1qrinm_medium

Immediately, Reis pops his legs out behind him from butterfly, posts his feet, drives forward with the double underhooks and executes a normal bear hug type takedown.

Essentially all of his stuff is half guard, x-guard and deep half are just specific half guard positions. Reis is using his hooks (feet) to move Shad's legs off balance and then he sweeps/stands or improves position.

It might be worth checking out some deep half guard videos on youtube, or some of Marcelo Garcia using the X guard to stand up with a single just for further illumination.

I didn't have as much luck finding the videos I was looking for to illustrate these points so please pop them into the comments if you've got 'em.

Suspension hammer hovers above brawl fighters

April 30th, 2010

It looks like Tennessee is planning on punishing everyone involved in the Strikeforce CBS brawl. Scott Coker has just revealed that Robbie Lawler will be taking on Babalu at a 195 pound catchweight in June instead of Jason Miller since the commission indicated that Mayhem would most likely be serving a suspension at the time. The fight is good news for Babalu, who just found out his DREAM gig in May no longer exists. By the time he fights for Strikeforce in June, he’ll have been without a fight for over 10 months. I’m sure Lawler is thrilled about another catchweight fight, but a fight is a fight and he’s also no stranger to riding the Strikeforce bench for long periods of time.

As for news regarding the fate of Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez, the Diaz brothers, and that random fat dude involved in the scrum, it might be a while:

Tennessee Athletic Commission Director Jeff Mullen said on Thursday that the incident was still under investigation. It was intonated that any potential sanctioning process with the fighters involved could take anywhere from one to two months to determine. Mullen declined to give further comment.

If Nick Diaz is lucky, the commission might move so inexplicably slow he might not get suspended before his headline DREAM fight on May 29th against Mach Sakurai. Then again, it’s not like he’s the kind of person who’d let a pesky thing like that stop him from fighting in Japan.

Godsmack’s new music video “Crying like a bitch”

April 30th, 2010

I dunno if Godsmack are big MMA fans or they just know where their bread is buttered. The UFC seems amusingly trapped in the early 00’s musically (look no further to Dana’s attempt to book Limp fucking Bizkit for last year’s Fan Expo as proof) and there aren’t many bands that have benefited from this as much as Godsmack. So it’s like heavy metal synergy to have their latest video loaded to the tits with UFC fight footage.

Oops!

April 30th, 2010

A story that started out with a big bang and Tito Ortiz in jail looks like it will end with a whimper and reconciliation.

Jenna, who accused Tito of injuring her during an argument, now tells TMZ, “What actually happened has now been dramatically distorted and misinterpreted and remarks that both Tito and I made after the police arrived reflect the state of shock that we were both in.” Translation — he didn’t hurt me.

As for Tito, we’re told he’s now backing off what he strongly insinuated … that Jenna is an OxyContin addict. We’re told Tito’s position now is that he found two OxyContin pills and may have jumped to conclusions. Jenna says the pills were very old. And, as we first reported, Jenna tested negative for drugs this week.

Tito’s lawyer, Chip Matthews, tells TMZ the whole thing was “a big misunderstanding.”

Yeah, Jenna Jameson misunderstanding that falsely accusing someone of beating on women is okay. Jenna’s story had raised a number of eyebrows because it kept changing depending on how pissed at Tito she was at the time. And to top it off, Fighters Only noticed a few other problems with her story as well:

Jameson’s claims to have torn ligaments in her shoulder, which she told one media source was a rotator cuff injury, were cast into doubt almost immediately when she was seen carrying a massive suitcase with the supposedly injured arm, carrying a child and slamming a heavy Jeep door with no apparent discomfort.

Cynical onlookers felt she was playing the victim and this was exacerbated by her wearing a gigantic bandage on her supposedly injured arm, placing the strap on… her elbow. Biology locates the rotator cuff in the shoulder, which makes one wonder what benefit an elbow bandage would provide.

So let this be a lesson: don’t get between a girl and her oxies.

Bonuses sweeten the WEC’s paygrade

April 30th, 2010

WEC pay is out and while Dana White has promised that the little guys would be getting more money because this was a PPV, it must be coming in the form of those behind the scenes payments because they haven’t showed up in the official numbers disclosed to the California State Athletic Commission. Here’s the figures, from highest paid to lowest (with a breakdown of show/win / bonus money in brackets where applicable:

  • Manny Gamburyan: $101,000 (18k/18k + 65k KOTN)
  • Leonard Garcia: $93,000 (14k/14k + 65k FOTN bonus)
  • Ben Henderson: $91,000 (13k/13k + 65k SOTN)
  • Chan Sung Jung: $70,000 (5k + 65k FOTN)
  • Jose Aldo: $40,000 (20k/20k)
  • Urijah Faber: $28,000
  • Shane Roller: $28,000 (14k/14k)
  • Mike Brown: $21,000
  • Scott Jorgensen: $21,000 (10.5k/10.5k)
  • Takeya Mizugaki: $16,000 (8k/8k)
  • Donald Cerrone: $14,000
  • Alex Karalexis: $10,000
  • Rani Yahya: $9,000
  • Chad Mendes: $8,500 (4.5k/4k)
  • Brad Pickett: $8,000 (4k/4k)
  • Anthony Pettis: $8,000 (4k/4k)
  • Anthony Njokuani: $7,000
  • Antonio Banuelos: $7,000
  • Tyler Toner: $5,000 (3k/2k)
  • Anthony Morrison: $4,000
  • Brandon Visher: $4,000
  • Demetrious Johnson: $3,000

It makes baby Jesus cry that Demetrious Johnson, flyweight prospect extraordinaire, only got 3000 bucks. But on the plus side, WEC employees replaced by UFC staff on the card also got paid according to Dana White. And the Korean Zombie Chan Sung Jung must be glad he got a bonus … without it he would have been looking at 5000 bucks (and who knows how much of that gets taxed) and a 6 month suspension due to a broken wrist.

There are some people in this world who are so socially inept and abrasive in real life that they can only function on the Internet, relying on non-relationships with total strangers via message boards and blog comments. And then, there are some people who can't even do that right. Such is the case with "thisredengine," a truly bizarre individual who showed up here out of the blue on Tuesday, and immediately tried to impress all of you by claiming the following:

- He's pretty well-known and respected over at BloodyElbow.com, and regularly tweets with Leland Roling. He's pretty much an unofficial staffer there.
- MMA legend "Gens" Pulver once acknowledged something he wrote.
- He's a jet-setting world traveler, on account of his job.

- He ignores all comments from people he doesn't know, which on this site would be everybody.

Though many of us (including myself) begged him to fuck off and leave us alone, he refused to fuck off. And so, new contributor ReX13 hit him with what will go down in history as the "I Have a Dream" speech of CagePotato.com...

Zuffa Math (200,40,28, 7, 5): Why Merging the WEC and UFC Is Harder Than it Looks

April 30th, 2010

Wec-logo1_mediumPromoted from the Fan Posts by Kid Nate.

In some ways merging the Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting makes perfect sense.  Both groups are owned by the same company, Zuffa, and both feature the best fighters in the world in their showcase divisions.  Combining the two would give a new look UFC a near monopoly on the world's most talented fighters.  But things are never as easy as they seem-which is why the WEC seems safe as a stand alone promotion for now.

It boils down to fighters and their deals.  Right now the UFC keeps around 200 fighters under contract.  More than that would be untenable, as they just don't promote enough fight cards to support any additional athletes.  Less than that is inviting disaster when fighters get injured and allows the possibility of a competitor laying their hands on a potentially world class talent.

Split between the five weight classes they promote (Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight, and Lightweight) that is approximately 40 fighters in each division.  That gives matchmaker Joe Silva 20 fights in any given period he can make and the ability to ensure that the most promising fighters in the class fight under the UFC banner.

If the UFC added the bantamweight and featherweight classes, giving them more potential title fights and some additional exciting matchups, each division they promote would be forced to take a hit.  Instead of 40 fighters in each weight class, the UFC would be stuck with just 28. The number of potential matchups would be limited, the chance potential stars would slip through the cracks would be greater, and the opportunity for a handful of injuries to demolish fight cards would increase astronomically.  Something would have to give.

We've seen it before:  in the early Zuffa era the UFC stopped promoting lightweights.  Despite speculation that the move revolved around BJ Penn, the truth is that it was a lack of fight cards that necessitated the change. There just wasn't enough room on UFC shows to promote five robust divisions.  The same is true with seven divisions today.

The obvious solution to this issue probably springs immediately to mind. Why not just promote more UFC cards? Sounds easy enough.  The problem is with their television partners.  The UFC is opposed to creating more PPV cards.  It's already difficult enough to find the kind of compelling matchups that fans will pay for. So that's out.

SPIKE has been a tremendous assett to the UFC and it's a relationship both parties see continuing into the future.  But SPIKE definitely prizes their exclusive relationship with the UFC.  They aren't willing to pay the same amount of money for a promotion that is spread out across a number of networks, with SPIKE as just another partner. So spreading the UFC product among a variety of network partners is out (except for the shows allowed under SPIKE contract).

The desire to remain an exclusive partner doesn't mean that SPIKE is looking for additional UFC programming.  The number of Fight Night shows seems to work perfectly for them and they don't appear willing to run any additional cards at the current price. So additional UFC shows on SPIKE are out.

That's what makes the WEC useful. Why maintain the illusion of separate promotions?  The answer begins and ends with television.  Zuffa wants control of as much airtime and as many fighters as possible. Their current arrangement with SPIKE doesn't allow them to promote more than four  UFC shows a year outside of the network.  That leaves a lot of fighters under contract short fights if the UFC alone is the only way to get fighters in the cage.  The number of fighters in each division would need to be reduced just to find room on the card for them all if the UFC is the only option. Enter the WEC.  Operating under the pretense of being a separate promotion, the WEC banner allows Zuffa to promote seven additional shows a year on Versus, without falling astray of their deal with SPIKE. This allows them to maintain 40 fighters per division, allowing for diverse, interesting matchups on every show.

When the Versus deal expires at the end of the year, all bets are off for the WEC. As we saw last week, they are a promotion in name only.  Hell, even their logo has disappeared.  If the UFC inks new television deals, there may be no need to pretend that the little guys are in a unique organization all their own.  The fighters with potential to connect to the audience, guys like Urijah Faber and Jose Aldo, will be able to be promoted on the UFC's marque shows. Until then, merging the WEC and UFC is mathematically impossible.
