Dana White talks WMMA
Here's Dana White on Forbes Sports Money giving a bunch of boilerplate answers. But mixed in there's this glimmer of hope for the future of Women's MMA:
"There's this big misconception out there about me that i don't like women's fighting and everything else. I have no problem with women's fighting. The problem right now, it was a problem with boxing and it's a problem with MMA right now is you don't have enough women that are good enough to create an entire division. So what you get is you get a couple of women who are really good, and a lot of women who really aren't. And I don't like lopsided fights, especially with women. So as this sport continues to grow, if there are more and more women where you can actually create an entire division with a lot of talented women, I'm all about it."
Hey, it's better than the 'Never' he gave a few months back. What's frustrating is there is a 135 pound division that's deep enough, but because Strikeforce sucks at scouting and they're still obsessed with the very shallow indeed Gina Carano division, this isn't apparent. It's this lame catch-22 we're stuck in. They won't do women's fights because there's not enough women, and there aren't enough women because there aren't enough women's fights.
Fortunately, there's a shitload of WMMA going on in the lower level local shows. I dunno if the sport will be able to draw more Ronda Rousey level olympic athletes without a system that will allow them to make more than 150 bucks a fight, but I'm hopeful that pissed off housewives and teenagers will come out of the woodwork and force the spotlight on WMMA so the UFC can't ignore them.
