Thomas Gerbasi, UFC - "You gotta start growing up and taking things serious."
The words directed at Jacob Volkmann two years ago didn't come from his wife, his parents, or a close friend, but from the owner of a bank in his hometown of Fergus Falls, Minnesota who apparently believed that being a professional fighter wasn't the right path for a family man who was also a practicing chiropractor.

With a career record of 22-5, UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger was doing just fine the way things were.

But in the ultra-competitive world of professional mixed martial arts,
if you're not moving forward, you're about to get passed up.

With that in mind, Ellenberger took his training camp from his native
Nebraska to Orange County, California, and he's looking forward to
displaying the results at this weekend's UFC on Versus 2 event.

I missed the first two rounds of this fight live. The Chicago Blackhawks had defeated the Nashville Predators in game 5 of their quarterfinal series earlier in the day (it was the miracle comeback in which Kane tied the game shorthanded in the third and Hossa put in the winner in overtime). In my hockey rage and an addiction to digital pucks, I hopped on the ol' XBox 360 for a few games of NHL 10 while I waited for the Aldo vs. Faber pay-per-view to start.

Now, to be fair, I loaded up a questionable stream of the prelim fights on my laptop while I played. I am an MMA journalist afterall. I just let my ears passively pick up the action.

Mike and Joe seemed incredibly excited from the get-go. I glanced over to the fight from time-to-time, but still had no intention of putting down my sticks.

I knew I made a mistake when the hyperbole didn't die down through two rounds. I finished my game, checked out the third round, and hoped it would make the pay-per-view show, so I wouldn't look like an asshole.

Fortunately for me, the Zuffa production staff wanted to milk this one for all it was worth.

I won't bore you with a description of the fight. Just go watch it.

Full voting results after the break.

James Toney is fighting Randy Couture at UFC 118 in Boston, which seems like a pretty smart booking by the UFC when you think about it: they’re both champions in their sport, and they’re both older than dirt. But the fight had more to do with Couture sniffing out an easy payday than a lot of deep thinking by Zuffa. The original plan was actually Toney vs Kimbo:

“The person I wanted to fight right off the bat was Brock Lesnar,” Toney said in a live chat with MMAFighting.com. “He’s a champion, I’m a champion and I wanted to do it. But they said I couldn’t do that. Then they said, ‘How about Kimbo?’ But I said, ‘That’s too easy. That’s like kicking a little kid’s butt.’ But then Randy started saying he wanted to fight me, so I said, ‘OK, you’re the first one getting it.’”

So to recap, Toney asked for Lesnar, the UFC countered with Kimbo, and they ended up somewhere in the middle. Too bad for Kimbo, who I guess didn’t fit in with any other UFC booking plans and ended up unemployed soon after. He probably could have beaten Toney too the same way he trounced Ray Mercer. Boxers are always ‘I’m the greatest, I’m gonna whup that ass!’ until someone runs into them and drags them to the ground.

When the UFC first got back in bed with the UK, the sex was pretty good and regular too. Sure, it was a rare blue moon when a title would make it onto the card (the analogy equivalent of getting to blow your load all over her face), but still … three events a year wasn’t bad. Then just like with your marriage, sex just stopped. It’ll be one month shy of a year since the last shag when the UFC returns to the UK with UFC 120, and that’s a pretty missionary event with Bisping vs Akiyama and Dan Hardy vs Carlos Condit.

But so long as you’re getting something regularly, it’s not too bad right? And now the UFC UK’s prez is talking about what sounds like a series of Fight Night UK cards:

UFC’s UK president Marshall Zelaznik confirmed the Las Vegas-based MMA group have already planned a provisional date for a fight at the Braehead Arena next year.

“We’re looking at Braehead in the first quarter of next year,” Zelaznik told DailyRecord.co.uk.

The proposed fight card, which UFC hope to confirm before their fan expo in London in October, will form one of a series of new Fight Night shows planned for the UK in 2011.

Already a hit in the US, the midweek cards are seen by UFC chiefs as a way of taking the sport to smaller cities and arenas than London and Manchester.

In terms of building regional talent and satisfying local markets, UFC Fight Nights are a no brainer. Then again, so is having more than one event a year in a country you’re trying to break out in.

If a fighter travels to Australia to compete on a pay-per-view that's being headlined by Ken Shamrock vs. Pedro Rizzo, the chances are pretty good that they did it because they needed the money.

And it the unfortunately case of Impact FC, they may not get it.

Cage Potato reveals that most, if not all of the combatants who participated on the Impact FC fight cards on July 10 (Brisbane) and July 18 (Sydney) are not in receipt of their complete fight purses.

Karo Parisyan, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Jesse Taylor have since confirmed the report.

And it may come as a complete shock (not really) that the failure to compensate said fighters stems from a lack of communication/cooperation between the financial backer and the MMA promoter.

First up is Impact FC financial backer Andrew McManus, as he throws promoter Tom Huggins under the bus:

“[Tom] Huggins has run back to Brazil and is uncontactable, whilst I (who never negotiated, contracted or was a party to any deal) have now been left trying to find funds to pay the men whilst all the false promises of sponsorships (never happened) and late gate sales and walk up all turned out to be lies.”

Huggins, naturally, didn't appreciate the accusations (or the tire marks):

“That statement is categorically untrue. I can provide you with the agreement between Andrew and myself, which clearly demonstrates that my responsibility was to procure fighters and make matches for the event within a given budget. The agreement clearly shows that ALL of the financing for the events, including fighter purses, was the responsibility of McManus. That being said, I feel that at the end of the day McManus being the professional that he is will fulfill his obligations and that the fighters will be paid.”

There's much more to the story over at Cage Potato but in the end there is really only one thing that matters: A group of fighters who are trying to make a living traveled to Australia to compete. They held up their end of the bargain and now it's time for someone at Impact FC to hold up theirs.

There's a lot of heat on the UFC for the low pay scale that up-and-coming fighters receive when competing inside the Octagon for the first time. But they can at least rest assured that win or lose, they're still getting paid. That's one of the unspoken benefits of competing under the jurisdiction of a state athletic commission.

Stay tuned for further details to this developing story as they become available.
